Abstract

A method of treating textile materials e.g. yarn packages &c in a vacuum process, includes the steps of introducing said material into a chamber, evacuating the chamber to a sub-atmospheric pressure of the order of 20 inches of mercury, holding said pressure for a period of time equal to at least half that of the time taken to attain that pressure from atmospheric pressure, and admitting a gaseous treating medium into the chamber to raise the pressure therein to an intermediate sub-atmospheric pressure. The treatment may further include evacuating the chamber after the admission of the gaseous treating medium to a sub-atmospheric pressure of about 20 inches of mercury, holding this pressure for a period of time equal to at least half of that taken to attain this pressure from the intermediate pressure and admitting further gaseous treating medium to return the pressure in the chamber to an intermediate sub-atmospheric pressure. The treating medium may be steam and the treatment may be further characterised by allowing the pressure in the chamber to oscillate about the intermediate pressure by the admission of short bursts of steam at periodic intervals. After the treatment the chamber is brought back to atmospheric pressure by the admission of air.
