Abstract

1534018 Humidifying tobacco JOHN MOHR & SONS 17 Nov 1975 47295/75 Heading A2C A body of tobacco 11 located in a gas tight chamber 10 is moistened by inserting a probe 22 into the bale; evacuating the chamber through the probe 22 and a vacuum conduit 27 so that the pressure in the chamber falls to 13 (Fig 2); injecting steam into the chamber while continuing evacuation through the probe through a conduit 15 so that the pressure rises to C and the temperature rises to between 152‹F and 160‹F; holding for a period at that pressure; re-evacuating the chamber through the probe so that the pressure falls to E and the temperature falls to between 130‹F and 145‹F; holding the tobacco at constant pressure E-F in the presence of steam while continuing evacuating through the probe; and finally raising the pressure to atmospheric. Evacuation of the chamber through the probe and vacuum conduits is carried out using a system of steam ejectors 30, 35, 36 and a condenser 25.
