1288168 Treating tobacco SERVICE D EXPLOITATION INDUSTRIELLE DES TABACS ET DES ALLUMETTES 4 March 1970 [6 March 1969] 10407/70 Heading A2C A process for the removal of alkaloids, e.g. nicotine, from tobacco, which may be in shredded form or in bales &c., comprises subjecting the tobacco to ammonia in the vapour state and subsequently to water vapour, the tobacco being subjected to an industrial vacuum during at least a part of the process. An industrial vacuum, as distinct from a high vacuum, is defined as one obtainable by industrial apparatus such as a vacuum pump with oil-lubricated vanes. In an example, tobacco is introduced into a chamber in which the pressure is firstly reduced to 20 mm. mercury, after which water vapour is introduced allowing the pressure to rise to a value of 300 mm. mercury (at 75‹C) which is maintained for 5 minutes, whereupon the pressure is reduced to 60 mm. mercury. Gaseous ammonia is then admitted for 15 minutes until the pressure rises to 400 mm. mercury and this condition maintained for 60 minutes, after which the pressure is reduced to 30 mm. mercury. After a 5 minute period of rinsing with water vapour during which the pressure rises to 300 mm. mercury the process is completed by reduction of pressure to 20 mm. mercury before admission of air to establish atmospheric pressure.
