Abstract

975,279. Vacuum freeze drying. LEYBOLD-ANLAGEN HOLDING A.G. Jan. 12, 1962 [Jan. 19, 1961], No. 1277/62. Heading F4G. In a method of continuous freeze drying, the material to be dried is conducted through a tubular vacuum-drying chamber having at least two longitudinal zones which are arranged to be at least partly isolated from one another, the process being controlled by producing in the zones predetermined levels of pressure and/or temperature which correspond to the required degree of dryness of the material in the zones. Material to be dried is conveyed through a tubular vacuum drying chamber 1 on linked trolleys 7 having baffles 20 thereon which conform to the cross-section of the chamber so as substantially to divide it into zones 2, 3, 4, in which the pressure and/or temperature can be controlled by evacuating means 17, 18, 19 respectively in accordance with a predetermined pressure and/or temperature programme. Vacuum gauges 14, 15 and 16 are provided, indicating the pressures in each zone and heatexchange devices (not shown) may also be utilized in each zone.
