Abstract
1433622 Moistening tobacco AMF INC 24 April 1974 [27 June 1973] 30473/73 Heading A2C In a process for moistening a body of tobacco, two or more elongate cavities are formed in the tobacco which is placed in an enclosed chamber, the latter is evacuated and filled with steam, suction is applied at one end of at least one but not all of the elongate cavities, the remaining cavity or cavities being open to the chamber, steam is allowed to pass into the tobacco until a predetermined quantity of moisture has been administered, with the proviso that the tobacco is unsupported throughout the elongate surfaces of the cavities. Fig. 1 shows a body of tobacco 10 with three cores 11 resting on a flat trolley 13 in chamber 14. A central well 16 is connectible with a vacuum pump (not shown). In Fig. 2 evacuation is effected upwardly through inverted funnel-shaped housing 32. The embodiments of Figs. 3 and 4 are arranged to provide continuous or semi-continuous processes in which a bell chamber 40 is provided and a cover device 76 render the tobacco suitable for transportation on a conveyor belt to the steaming station.
