Abstract

A method of extracting air from articles or materials (e.g. a bundle of towels) in an autoclave during a pre-sterilizing period, comprises the steps of connecting the autoclave to a vacuum pump until a desired vacuum is reached (e.g. 80% vacuum) and then of connecting the autoclave to a steam supply until a substantially atmospheric pressure of steam is reached, which steps are repeated at least once before sterilization proper is started, connection of the autoclave to the vacuum pump being maintained during a first part of the time (e.g. to half way between the pressure stages) during which the autoclave is connected to the steam supply.
