Abstract

1,042,684. Rotary furnaces. PACIFIC SCIENTIFIC CO. March 10, 1965 [March 13, 1964], No. 10247/65. Heading F4B. A furnace for carburizing, carbonitriding, carbon testing, hardening or drawing small metal parts in a protective gas atmosphere comprises a cylindrical rotary retort 10 with a removable lining 8 having a smooth helical ridge 9 to transport the parts therethrough, mounted in a chamber 4 heated by gas burners 6 or electricity. The chamber 4 is defined by a furnace casing 1 and its insulation 3. The thin temperature resistant wrought alloy lining 8 in which the ridge 9 is formed, slidably fits inside a thicker temperature resistant alloy outer casing 10, and is welded thereto at the discharge end 15. The charging end of the retort, supported by bearing collar 16 and rollers 17 is closed by end-plate 11 through which vibrating charging tray 13 projects through central aperture 12 surrounded by curtain burner 14 to check air infiltration. A frusto-conical discharge apron 18 is attached to the rear end of the retort 8, 10 to which'a sprocket wheel 19 driven by chain 20 off a variable speed reversible D:C. motor is secured to enable the retort to be rotated or oscillated at a desired speed. A conical insulated closure plug 26 formed with an integral discharge shoot 28 seals the discharge end of retort 8, 10. The plug 26 mounted on casing 1 presses against seals 36, 35 mounted between itself and the sprocket wheel 19 and'the sprocket wheel and the casing 1 respectively, with a yieldable pressure under the action of compression springs (Fig. 3, not shown) to seal off the interior of the retort 8, 10 and the combustion chamber 4 respectively from the atmosphere. The treated parts are discharged through shoot 28 past a liquid seal on to a conveyor belt 40 in a circulating oil-filled quench tank 38 to be deposited in basket 43. A thermocouple 45, peepsight 44 and protective gas supply inlet 48 are provided in the closure plug 26, additional protective gas being introduced at duct extension 28<SP>1</SP> which also includes a Venturi oil fume exhaust 45<SP>1</SP>.
