Abstract

783,442. Drying webs. SPOONER, W. W. March 16, 1956 [Dec. 17, 1954], No. 36546/54. Class 34(1) A travelling web 36, Fig. 1, of material is heated by passing first over a rotary drum 21 open at one end and supported on external rollers 25, 26 and then over a drum 22 also open at one end and supported on internal rollers 27, 28, so that one side of the web contacts the surface of the drum 21 while the other side contacts 'that of the drum 22, each drum being heated by jets of air issuing from axially-extending heating units 29 spaced around the inside of the drum. The outer side of the web passing over the drums is heated by jets of air issuing from heating units 30 spaced around the exterior of the drums. The units 29, 30 each consist of a manifold 43, Fig. 2, communicating with a duct having heaters 42 and an air circulating fan 41 driven by a motor 40 and having an inlet opening communicating with a central chamber 46. The air is directed on to the inside of the drums through nozzles 44 in the manifold and withdrawn therefrom through passages 45 connected to the chamber 46. The units 29 are inserted into the drums through the open ends thereof arid attached by radial arms 50 to a hollow shaft 34, while the outer units are supported by a framework 51. Make-up air is supplied to the chambers 46 of the outer units by a fan 31 through pipes 32, 33, while the chambers of the inner units are supplied through radial pipes connected to the hollow shaft 34. The drums may be rotated by their supporting rollers 25...28 or otherwise. Specification 485,919 is referred to.
