[Also in Group XIII] Liquid in or on a flexible continuous sheet material in a machine glazed paper-making machine is evaporated by passage over one or more heated rollers 22, Fig. 2, each having a drying hood 20 thereabout containing pressure chambers 30, 32 ... 40 arranged transversely to the direction of movement of the material and individually supplied with heated air from a common manifold 42. The air is delivered to the material through apertures 50, Fig. 4, and thereafter exhausted by flowing transversely of the material and through openings 56 to exhaust passages, e.g. passage 44, formed between each pair of pressure chambers and spaced apart transversely of the direction of travel of the material. The cross-sectional area of the outlet apertures 50 is less than that of the exhaust openings 56 to ensure the velocity of the impinging air maintains the material in contact with the cylinder 22. The air is circulated by fans 70, one being shown in Fig. 3, having their inlets mounted in a supply chamber 68 in which the air is heated by steam-filled, finned pipes 76 or by an electrical or fuel burner, a portion of the moisture-containing air being bled off through exhaust ducts 100 and fresh air supplied through duets 102. The rate of supply of drying air to each chamber from the manifold 42 is controlled by a shutter 92 controlled by a Bowden cable 94 which covers or uncovers a cusp-shaped port 90 in a wall 88 between the chamber and manifold sQ as to obtain an even moisture distribution transversely of the finished web of material. The hood is pivotable on a framework 120 at one end of the cylinder 22 and to a piston-rod 122 at the other end. In a modification, the pressure chambers are not spaced apart by positioning the exhaust passages therebetween but adjoin one another, the exhaust passages which extend circumferentially of the drying cylinder being mounted within the pressure chambers themselves.
