Abstract

935,757. Bearings. FISHER & LUDLOW Ltd. May 2, 1961 [Feb. 2, 1960], No. 3716/60. Class 12 (1). [Also in Group XXX] In an endless belt conveyer, each idler roller 16 is moulded in a resilient non-metallic material, preferably nylon, and comprises a plain bearing portion 20 arranged between two ball-bearings 24. The bore 21 of the bearing portion 20 is slightly larger, e.g. <SP>1</SP>/ 32 in., than the diameter of a shaft 15, the arrangement being such that under normal loading of the conveyer, deformation of the hub 19 of the roller is insufficient for the clearance between the bearing portion 20 and the shaft 15 to be taken up. The whole of the load is thus taken by the ball-bearings 24, Fig. 2. When the roller is abnormally loaded, e.g. during the passage of a large solid lump of bulk material, the hub 19 is deformed to an extent such that the upper side 21a of the bore 21 engages the shaft 15 and part of the abnormal load is transmitted through the plain bearing. The bearing portion 20 may be provided with an anti-friction liner. The bearing balls are of steel but when the loading of the roller is light they may be of a resilient material such as nylon. According to the Provisional Specification, idler roller assemblies as described in Specification 806,605 may be provided with a bearing consisting of a length of nylon bush moulded within the bore of the roller as described in Specification 926,004. The bush comprises a cylindrical sleeve having at each end an integral annular flanged portion. The outer ends of the flanges may extend in a radiallyinward direction to provide a retaining flange to retain the nylon balls in position, and each retaining flange may be formed with axially directed dogs so as to provide for driving connection with an adjacent similar bush of the next adjacent roller, the dogged connection between adjacent roller bushes being as described in Specification 924,191.
