Abstract

1374098 Bearings SKF INDUSTRIAL TRADING & DEVELOPMENT CO BV 16 Nov 1971 [16 Nov 1970] 53208/71 Heading F2A A roller bearing for accommodating radial and axial loads comprises inner and outer race rings (Fig. 1) and rollers 1 having part-spherical ends 2, 7, the race rings each having a radial flange 3, 5 at opposite axial ends of the bearing providing tapered surfaces 4, 6 shaped to create hydrodynamic lubrication with the adjacent part-spherical surfaces of the roller ends, the peripheral surfaces of the rollers between their ends and the raceways being relatively crowned whereby the peripheral surfaces of the rollers adjacent their ends are, during normal use, spaced from the raceways and substantially unloaded. When there is no axial load, the distribution of the radial loading is as shown at S1. When an axial load is imposed, the distribution of the radial loading shifts towards the ends of the rollers, as shown at S2 in Fig. 2. In further embodiments, the rollers are cylindrical and the raceways are crowned, or the rollers and the raceways are all crowned.
