Abstract

Fabrics, fibres or other fibrous materials are treated in a continuous process with liquid reagents which are decomposed by heat into corrosive gases or vapours, and heat, the heat being supplied by a superheated vapour under such conditions that the impregnating liquid is wholly converted into a superheated vapour in a heating chamber which is provided with means for exhausting excess vapours. As exemplified, a cotton fabric is impregnated with an aqueous chlorite solution at 20 DEG C., mangled, impregnated or sprayed with formic acid and passed to a heating chamber wherein superheated steam at a temperature of above 105 DEG C. is projected from nozzles on to both sides of the fabric at speeds in excess of 5 metres per second. The exhaust from the heating chamber is fed back to the inlet through a closed circuit having reheating means. Specifications 723,566, 734,732 and 764,483 are referred to.
