Abstract

Textile materials, which may be tows, yarns, staple fibres or woven or knitted fabrics of viscose rayon, cotton or regenerated protein, are treated with an aqueous solution containing a vinyl ester of a phosphorus-containing acid, or an ester of a phosphorus-containing acid which will decompose upon heating to yield a vinyl ester, and the materials are subsequently heated. The vinyl ester may be divinylamino phosphonate (CH2=CHO)2P(O) (NH2), divinyl methyl phosphonate, divinyl ethyl phosphonate, trivinyl phosphate, a vinyl ester of a poly-phosphorus acid or a sulphur analogue thereof, e.g. divinyl amino thiophosphonate (CH2=CHO)2P(S) (NH2). Specified compounds which will yield such an ester on heating are b -hydroxy-, b -amino- and b -chloro-ethyl esters of phosphorus-containing acids such as bis-2-chloro-ethyl-amino phosphonate (ClCH2CH2O)2P(O)(NH2) and bis - 2 - hydroxy - ethyl - amino phosphonate (HOCH2CH2O)2P(O)(NH2). The treating solution may contain a catalyst. In examples, viscose rayon and cotton fabrics are treated and the catalysts are sodium and potassium carbonate and sodium hydroxide. After treating with the aqueous solution the fabrics are dried, in some cases on a pin stenter, and are baked at temperatures ranging from 140 DEG to 190 DEG C. The aqueous solutions may also contain sodium chloride or ethyl alcohol.
