Abstract

782,904. Valves. SHERWOOD, L. V. Aug. 23, 1955 [Aug. 23, 1954], No. 24483/54. Class 135. In a ball-valve device comprising two main portions 51, 67 with readily-releasable coupling means consisting of a stirrup 30 and an eccentric , roller 33, for securing the portions together in watertight relationship, one portion 67, including a ball-float, not shown, carried by an arm pivoted thereon and coupled to a main valve closure 72, the other portion 51 including a component adapted to be secured to a water inlet and to be housed within a tank 52, and an auxiliary valve closure 55 adapted to be moved against a seat 61 to prevent water being sucked back into the inlet due to the occurrence of a partial vacuum, the closure 55 also co-operates with another seat 58 to automatically prevent the passage of water between the inlet and the tank when the two parts are uncoupled. Mains water enters the tank 52 through the portion 51 having an extension 53 that may be arranged at 45 degrees to the inlet, in which extension is threaded a seating member 54 through which freely passes the fluted stem 56 of the closure 55; the member 54 embodies the seat 58 and another seat 59 for the main valve closure 72. The member 54 has an extension 60, fitted with the strainer 62, which provides the seat 61 whilst the main closure 72 has a protrusion 77 passing through a sealing washer 75 to coact with the fluted stem 56. Slidably in the part 67 is the main valve stem 73 to which is secured the washer 75, the stem 73 being connected to the ball valve arm via an adjusting screw. A chamber 68 in portion 67 opens into the tank by way of a delivery pipe which may be swung into a near horizontal position to ascertain whether the valve is functioning. An adjustable flow restrictor 50 is provided in the portion 51.
