Abstract

577,582. Chlorinating water. BELL, N. M., and CHILDS, W. C. Dec. 20, 1943, Nos. 21334/43 and 12178/44. Addition to 551,634. [Class 46] [Also in Group II] In a modification of the apparatus described in the parent Specification, the container 22, Fig. 4, for chlorinating solution is inverted over a vessel 12a in an outer vessel 12 into which the siphon tube 23 enters. The container 22 has a stopper provided with a tube 19 the inner end of which -is adapted to be closed by a valve 71 on a stem 70. The other end of the stem has a rubber plug 72. Before the container is to be turned from its upright position to the inverted position, the valve 71 is lifted to prevent leakage of liquid. When the container is brought into the position of use the valve is opened by the pressure on the plug 72 of the bottom of vessel 12a. Liquid discharged into this vessel flows through a small hole into the vessel 12. Flow of liquid from the container 22 ceases when liquid in vessel 12a covers the outlet from tube 19. The siphon tube 23 may be adjusted as described in the parent Specification or by any of the arrangements shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. The invention also comprises these arrangements for adjustment of the siphon tube, in the apparatus described in the parent Specification. As shown in Fig. 1, the siphon tube 23 is supported by arod 43 attached at one end to a counterweighted lever 40 and at the other end to a trough 44 in the water supply.tank 45. As the water fills the tank under control of a ball valve 46 a small quantity is diverted to the trough 44, whereby eventually the lever 40 is overbalanced and the rod 43 is lowered together with the siphon tube 23, so that chlorinating solution is fed therethrough to the tank 45. When the ball valve 46 closes the trough 44 empties through a small leak-hole, allowing the lever 40 to return the tube 23 to the raised position. In a modification shown in Fig. 2, the rod 43 is in two parts connected by an adjusting sleeve 43b and the lower part is connected to the arm 48 of the ball valve 46. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3, the lever 40 is connected to a slidablymounted tube 52 closed at the lower end and carrying an outlet tube 55 which supports the siphon tube 23. Water is fed from the mains to the tube 52 by a pipe 56 and when sufficient has accumulated the lever 40 is overbalanced whereby the siphon tube is lowered and chlorinating solution is discharged therethrough. When the supply of water to pipe 56 ceases, the water in tube 52 leaks away through a hole 57 and eventually the lever 40 operates to raise the siphon tube to the inoperative position.
