Glass 142(1) In a warping machine in which the speed of rotation of the warp beam is varied to maintain a constant winding, speed, a speed controlling device is incorporated in the drive to the beam and is connected to the cage of a differential gear. One input member of the gear is connected to a roller driven by the warp and the other input member is. driven by a constant speed motor; any difference in the speeds of the input members causes the cage to rotate and alter the speed of the drive to the beam. In one embodiment, a beam 8 is driven through a clutch 10 from a motor 9. The warp 2 passes over tension rollers 4, 5, 6and the roller 6 is connected by a flexible drive to one 13 of the input wheels of the differential gear 14, the other input wheel 15 being driven by a constant speed motor 16. Any difference in speed, between the wheels 13, 15 causes the cage to rotate and, through a shaft 11 to move the brushes of the motor 9 and thereby vary its speed. In other embodiments; the differential gear 14 may be replaced by an epicyclic gear or by a spur-gear differential. When the beam 8 is stopped by a brake, the motor 16 is also stopped by a brake to prevent the motor 9 from being speeded up.
