Abstract
780,065. Extrusion-coating cable cores. SHARDLOW ELECTRIC WIRES, Ltd., and HARGREAVES, F. G. Dec. 29,1954 [Sept. 30, 1953], No. 26845/53. Class 87(2). A sector-shape conductor C, Fig. 3, which has been twisted to the desired lay prior to being insulated (the insulated twisted conductor being then built up with other insulated twisted conductors into a cable) is insulated by passing it through an extrusion-coating machine comprising a rotatable guide tube 24 and a rotatable die 18, the tube and the die being secured together by members 29 so that they rotate as one. The outlet O of the guide tube conforms in shape to that of the conductor, and the conductor moves forwardly without rotating, so that the conductor turns the guide tube and with it the die. The rotation of the guide tube and die may be assisted by an electric motor 27 via an adjustable pressure slip ring frictional drive 28 and chain drive 26. Figs. 1 and 2 show a modified machine in which the die 18 is coupled to the front end 14 of the guide tube 13 by keys 23. The die has slots 20, which connect the bore 12 with a tapered outlet 19 in the die, and is mounted in a hollow plug 22.
