Abstract
778,754. Charging coke ovens. KOPPERS GES., H. Jan. 2, 1956 [Jan. 3, 1955 ; March 10, 1955], No. 92/56. Class 51 (2). In a charging car for horizontal coke oven batteries, each hopper 7 discharges through segmental gates 8 into a guide funnel 10 formed with an annular chamber 13 supplying gaseous fluid, e.g. steam, compressed air, or coke oven gas through an annular slot 14 over the walls of a sleeve 15 seating on the upper frame 6 of a charging hole. Each annular chamber 13 has a connection 19 to a conduit 20 supplied with the gaseous fluid from a pipe 21 through an automatic coupling 22. The funnel 10 is connected to a main 25 which is under suction to draw off any gases escaping from the oven. The pressure of the gaseous fluid may be such as to prevent lateral dispersion of the coal, in which case the sleeve 15 can be omitted, or the pressure may prevent escape of gases from the oven, in which case the main 25 can be omitted. The sleeve 15 has a grooved flange forming a labyrinth seal with the frame 6, Fig. 2 (not shown). In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the segmental gates are replaced by a slide valve in the funnel 10, and the annular chamber 13 is carried on the lower end of the sleeve 15, which is slidably mounted on the said funnel.
