Abstract

909,809. Charging coke-ovens; operating coke-oven charging lids. WOODALL-DUCKHAM CONSTRUCTION CO. Ltd. Oct. 19, 1960 [Oct. 27, 1959], No. 36424/59. Classes 51(2) and 55(1). In order to prevent the discharge of smoke and gas during charging of a coke oven with four charging holes 1-4 and gas ascension pipes 6 leading to mains 7, charging car hoppers 12, 13, 14 and 15 have capacities so proportioned that on charging first the outer hoppers 12 and 15, then hopper 13, and finally hopper 14, a free gas space is left above mounds 18, 19 and 20, and mound 21 contains sufficient coal to fill the gaps between the mounds when leveller bar 16 is used. An existing installation may be adapted by extending hoppers 12 and 15 and fitting hoppers 13 and 14 with sleeves 22 and 23 respectively, hopper 13 being also fitted with a baffle 24. The hoppers have vibrators 55, and hopper 14 has a telescopic trunk 38, 39 lowered by an hydraulic jack 42, Fig. 2, through levers 43, 44 and 45 with a counterweight 48. Arcuate gates 49, 50, Fig. 2, are operated by hydraulic jack 53 through lever 52 and a limit switch 54 prevents travel of the car when gates 49, 50 are open. During discharge of hopper 14, charging holes 1, 2 and 4 are closed by lids 5 each operated by mechanism comprising a vertical shaft 26, Fig. 4, carrying a radial arm 27 engaging the lid stud 29 and raised and lowered by a counterweighted lever 33 actuated by an hydraulic jack 35, said shaft being also rotated by an hydraulic jack 31. In a modification, Figs. 6-8 (not shown), having a single gas collecting main at the pusher end of the oven hoppers 12, 14 and 15 have telescopic trunks. The trunks on hoppers 12 and 15 have upper annular chambers connected by a duct, whereby smoke and gases from charging hole 4 may be led back into the oven through charging hole 1 and retracted by an ascension pipe leading to said main. A sleeve is fitted round the leveller bar door opening in order to minimize leakage as in Specification 521,909. Specification 909,807 and U.S.A. Specifications 1,900,752 and 1,900,753 also are referred to.
