Charging.-In the charging of coke-ovens the fuel is delivered with such velocity that the charge is compressed into a dense cake. An apparatus suitable for the charging of vertical coke-ovens comprises a hopper e having lower and upper compartments e<1>, e<2>, which are emptied in turn, so that all parts of the charge have to drop some distance during the filling operation. The charge is maintained under pressure within the retort by a weight c carried by the oven closure in such manner that it can rise as the charge expands. The weight is formed with passages d for allowing free escape of gas. The charging opening is of the full crosssectional area of the oven and the closure may be made in sections and strengthening by ribs. As alternatives to the arrangement shown, the hopper may be raised during the charging operation, or the charge may be delivered by mechanical projectors.
