Abstract

229,880. Zuyderhoudt, P. C. March 21, 1924. Retort furnaces; discharging.-A retort furnace for the continuous production of low-temperature coke consists of an elevated " ring " oven, comprising a series of chambers each containing a battery of retorts 5, means for connecting these chambers with each other, with the outside air, and with a waste gas flue, and a discharging space underneath the chambers of a depth at least equal to that of the retorts. Fig. 2 shows a plan and Fig. 3 an end elevation of the battery. The chambers 4<a> - - 4<h> are arranged in two parallel rows between which extends a waste gas flue 15 and a collector flue 19 for connecting any two chambers with each other without passing through intermediate chambers. The sole of the oven has doors 14 opening on to a deep free space through which air is admitted into the oven, and through which also the retorts are discharged. The connections between successive chambers are controlled by sand-seal valves 17 and 21. Firing is obtained by gas burners 11 ignited through peep-holes. Gas pipes 12 may be connected to the gas main 13 by flexible connections and supported by hooks 50 so that the burners can be lowered to ignite them directly from below and so eliminate risk of explosion. The charge may be compressed by a ring 37, Fig. 7, loaded with weights 38. The retorts are charged by a hopper 44, Fig. 3, running on rails on the roof of the oven, through an opening above each retort closed by a cover 46 with a sand joint. During charging, the bottom of the retort may be temporarily supported by a cross-bar resting on the beams of the sole. To discharge each retort its door 14 is opened, the nut 28 is unscrewed, and a balanced movable platform 52 on a truck 51 is brought under the retort and raised to the bottom of the retort. The charge forming a solid cake of coke is released by striking the retort body, and the whole mass, including the bottom 25 and cone 26 of the retort, is received on the platform 52.
