Abstract
3795. Dempster &. Sons, R., and Toogood, H. J. Feb. 15. Charging.-Apparatus for charging vertical gas-retorts comprises a normally stationary bin suspended on w h e e l tracks from overhead coal bunkers in order to free the retort from its weight and provided at the top with a gas-tight coal - supply valve, a water-seal being interposed between the bin and retort. Coal passes from the bunker outlets 33, 34, Fig. 5, to shoots 12, 13 from which it is fed through a rotary plug valve 14 to the bin 1. The valve is provided with a screwed spindle 15, engaging with lock-nuts 16 by which the height of the valve is adjusted, and with a bevel-wheel 17 engaging with a pinion on a shaft by which the valve is rotated. A three-armed pointer 21 is mounted on the spindle to indicate which shoot is connected to the bin. The water-seal is shown in Fig. 3 and comprises a detachable tank 6 mounted on the retort mouthpiece 9 and surrounding an extension 5 of the bin. The inner wall 7 of the tank is lower than the outer wall 8 so that any overflow passes into the retort. Loops or eyes may be provided on the tank to engage with hooks on the bin, so that the tank can be lifted away with the bin when the retort is to be scurfed. Removable partitions 29 having T-heads sealed with fire-clay are arranged within the retort on each side of the charging-opening, and a by-pass pipe is arranged between the spaces on the outside of the partitions to facilitate the escape of gas to the take-off pipe.
