APPARATUS FOR MAKING GAS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 292,082, dated January 15, 1884.

subject of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Handsworth, in the county of Stafford, Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Making Gas, (for which I have obtained a patent in Great Britain, No. 4,697, bearing date October 3, 1882,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in gas-producers of the kind described in the specification of an application for Letters Patent of the United States of America filed by methe 4th day of May, 1883. In that speci fieation is described the combination, in a gasproducer, of a central tuyere, a solid hearth, and means for automatically removing incombustible refuse from the apparatus.
According to my present invention I combine with a central tuyere and means for i-mparting rotary motion thereto a curved bar or blade, extending at its outer end over the wall of the solid hearth, so that when the tuyere is rotated said arm shall be carried round with it in such manner that as it travels it will raise refuse matter within the box formed by the solid hearthand its wall and cause said refuse to pass over the wall.

The tuyere c is provided with a curtain or cap, 0, that dips into an annular vessel formed by thehearth and its walls. To this cap or curtain is secured a curved arm, k, formed with a blade, and extending outward and upward till it overlaps the wall annular box or hearth b outward into the annular space between the wall I) and the cone m, and lifts them over the edge of the wall I). The cone m (which supports the fire-brick lining a) and the annular box or hearth are bolted to three columns, 0 0 0, as shown.

The lower part of the tuyere cis contracted inside to form a throat for the steam-blast.

M are holes, into which a bar is inserted when the fuel in the producer requires stirring up. These holes are stopped with plugs when not in use.
I do not herein claim the solid hearth adapted to hold water to form a seal to prevent the escape of gas, nor the central tuyere, nor, broadly, the means for rotating the tuyere, or the means for automatically eleanin g the hearth of incombustible material, since these features form part of the subj cot-matter of another application filed by me May 4., 1883, and numbered 93,922; but 4 What I do claim is- 1. In a gas-producer, the combination,with a solid hearth, of a central tuyere, means for imparting rotary motion thereto, and a curved arm or blade for automatically removing incombustible refuse from the apparatus, substantially as described.
2. In a gas-producer, the combination of a solid hearth, with walls forming an annular box or chamber to receive incombustible refuse from the fuel, a central tuyere with ourtain or cap overlapping the inner wall of said box or chamber, a curved arm or blade attached to said tuyere, means for imparting rotary movement thereto, and a conical ease dipping into said box or chamber, so as,when the q, and holes 1* r, the Whole constructed, com- 10 bined', arranged, and operating substantially as described and illustrated.
