W. J. TAYLOR.
GAS PRODUCER.
No. 428,237. Patented May 2-0, 1890.-
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
YVILLIAM J. TAYLOR, OF CHESTER, ASSIGNOR TO THE TAYLOR GAS PRO- DUCER COMPANY, OF CAMDEN, NEW JERSEY.
GAS-PRODUCER.
, SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 428,237, dated May 20, 1890.
Application filed August 9, 1889. Serial No. 320,224:- (No model.)'
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, lVILLIAM J. TAYLOR, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Chester, in the county of Morris and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Producers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in the construction of a gas-producer shown and described in the Letters Patent No. 399,7 98 granted and issued to me under date of March 19, 1889. The gas-producer of said patent, among others issued to me of even date therewith, is for carrying out a method of making gas, which consists in placing and then maintaining a deep bed of ashin a chamber beneath a bed of incandescent fuel and introducing a blast of air or steam, or both,
through the ash and fuel, and the means em ployed for maintaining said deep bed of ash consists of a revolving table located beneath said ash-chamber and above an ash-pit, and arranged to permit grinding and discharging of the non-combustible material supported on said table over the periphery thereof.
The principal object of my present invention is to construct a gas-producer so that the operation of grinding and discharging the ash or other non-combustible material may be observed and more thoroughly effected.
A further object of my invention is to provide simple and efficient means for correcting any irregularity in the grinding of the producer due to the formation of clinker, by which the bed of ash or other non-combustible material may sink faster at one point than at another, or otherwise become abnormal.
A further object of my invention is to provide simple and effective means whereby the angle of repose of the ash on the table may be altered without either raising the table or lowering the ash-hopper.
My invention consists, in a gas-producer, first, of a main casing, the lower portion of which is provided with observation-openings fitted with doors and an ash-hopper forming the wall of an ash-chamber suspended or otherwise supported beneath a combustion-chamber, and provided with holes to enable the grinding operation to be observed, and bars to be inserted through said openings of the main casing and holes of the ash-hopper to break up clinker or to agitate the non-co1nbustible material in its passage downward through said hopper; second, a table capable of being rotated and adjustable gates depending or otherwise supported from the lower portion of said ash-hopper, whereby the discharge of ash or other non-combustible material may be governed or prevented at the point or place desired, and, third, a supported table capable of rotation and adapted to receive brackets or hooks for supporting a segmental band or ring to permit of a change being made in the angle of repose of the ash by simply varying the width or height of the segmental band or ring, thereby obviating the necessity of lowering said ash-hopper or of raisingsaid table. 7 y i The nature of my invention will -be more fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, which illustrates, partly in ver tical central section and partly in elevation, a gas-producer of my improved construction embodying the characteristic features of my invention.
Referring to the drawing, A is the metallic main casing with a flanged top plate B, constructed and arranged to form a receptacle for containing a supply of water.
0 is the ash-pit, provided with observation openings 0', fitted with doors and in the wall of said pit are provided apertures c for the reception of agitating-bars c and also an ash-pit door 0 D is the brick'foundation, provided with a horizontal conduit (1' and a suitable elbow (1 E is a feed-hopper fitting over the ringb of the top plate B.
c is a bell for closing the hopper, operated in any preferred manner.
F is the gas off-take, fitted to the rim 1) of the top plate B,or the gas may be discharged from the producer through the horizontal offtake F.
In the top plate B is provided one or more sight-openings b with covers I), for ascertaining the condition of the fuel in the producer.
G is the combustion-chamber of fire-brick or other preferred material, and preferably constructed bosh shape at both the top and bottom.
g is a chamber between the main casing A and the inner casing of the chamber G for the reception of loam, ash, or other suitable material to allow for expansion.
9 is a series of tubes arranged around the wall of and extending through the main casing A and the inner casing of the chamber G for permitting of an examination of the illcandescent fuel in the combustion-chamber. These peep-holes are provided with plugs 9 II is an ash-hopper, the walls of which are provided with perforations 71, through which bars may be inserted to break up clinker or other non combustible material, and also I provided with T-shaped catches or hooks h,
tached at the base to an angle-bar (Z embedded in the foundation D, and at the top to the casing A. The ash-hopper H is riveted or rests upon an angle-bar c, or otherwise suspended or supported beneath the fire-brick casing of the chamber G.
I is asteam or air blast inlet-pipe fitted into the brick foundation and communicating with a conduit d.
J is a sleeve, with a flange or plate j formed, preferably, integral therewith. This sleeve is heldin position by means of bolts j, passing through the flange j and the base-plate d. A pipe K, having a flange 70, formed, preferably, integral therewith, fits into the sleeve J and rests upon the upper edge thereof.
L is a circular table having a rim Z around its periphery and provided with hooks or catches Z, secured to the peripheral portion of the table and projecting therefrom. table L is secured by means of the bolts Z to the flange of the pipe K.
M is a pipe provided with a flange m and with one or more deflecting-hoods m held above the pipe M by means of bars m These deflecting-hoods have openings in the tops thereof, and above the upper one is a cap m held in position by means of a bar m The pipe M is fastened to the table L by means of bolts m.
N is a shaft extendingacross the ash-chamber O and supported in bearings 01 in the sleeve J, and also in the casing of the ash-pit C. To this shaft is secured a cog-wl1ee1n which meshes with the rack Z of the table, and near the end thereof is a gear-wheel 713, which meshes with a smaller gear-wheel 92, mounted on a short horizontal shaft 51;, 8X= tending through the casing of the ash-pit C. To the opposite extremity of the shaft w is The mounted a crank 19 for actuating said gear-,
wheels, and thereby imparting a rotary motion to the table L. 1
O is a segmental metallic ring or band held in position between the flange of the table L and the hooks or catches Z.
The mode of operation of the gas-producer hereinabove described is as follows: The fuel is fed into the combustion-chamber G through the feed-hopper E by lowering the hell 6, and the bell is then drawn upward snugly against the throat of the hopper. Air or steam and air are forced or otherwise admitted through the pipe I, conduit (1, and pipes K and M, and discharged into and through the bed of ash and fuel in the chamber G for efiecting combustion. The gas produced from the combustion of the fuel is conducted off through either the off-take pipe F or F for use.
When necessary during the time the producer is making gas to remove ash or other non-combustible matter, the table L may be revolved, and the requisite quantity of ash or other non-combustible material accumulating in the combustion-chamber G may be readily discharged over the periphery of the table into the ash-pit 0 without specially in terfering with the making of the gas, and, moreover, the grinding operation may be observed by opening the doors c and the clinker or other non-combustible material may be broken or agitated by inserting bars through the openings 0' in the wall of the ash-pit and the apertures c of the ash-hopper II.
The discharge of the accumulating ash or other non-combustable material over the pe riphery of the table L may be diminished or entirely arrested at any point by lowering the gates 7L2 and the angle of repose of the ash or other non-combustible material may be altered by the insertion of the bands or rings 0 between the rim of the table and the hooks or catches Z.
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a gas-producer provided with a main shell having a series of observation-doors in the lower part thereof, a perforated ash-hopper forming the wall of an ash-chamber and providedwith gates, an ash-supporting table located below said hopper, and means for revolving said table, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a gas-producer, the combination, with a bosh-shaped ash-hopper provided with sliding gates, of an ash-supporting table located immediately below said hopper and means for revolving the same, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. In a gas-producer, the combination, with a perforated ash-hopper having adjustable gates extending from the lower part thereof, of an ash supporting table located immediately below said hopper, means for revolving said table, hooks supported by said table,
and a segmental ring or bar held by said and adapted to receive a rim or ring, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
6. In a gas-producer, the combination, with a perforated ash-hopper provided with adj ustable gates, of an ash-supporting table, means for revolving the same, and a vertical blastpipe extending upward through said table, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
