Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. TAYLOR,
of Chester, in the county of Morris and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and 5 useful Improvements in Gas Producers, of
which the following is a specification.
The object of my present invention is to provide apparatus for ga-sifying fuel for making heating and other gas, or converting solid fuel into gaseous fuel, with a sectional bottom composed of a series of frnstunis of cones suitably arranged, so that air or steam and air under pressure may be introduced directly into the interior of the bottom and distributed radially, or nearly so, into contactwith the fuel for effecting combustion, and thereby preventing the formation of arches of 011' nker and sticking or elinkering of non-cmnbustt ble material to the wall. of the comlnistionchamber. The bottom is revolved intermittently or continuously by mechanical means for eifectually grinding up clinker accumulatin g, and discharging it, together with ashes, over the periphery of the bottom into a scaled ash-pit beneath. while the apparatus is inv full operation making gas, and without interference therewith. v p
The nature of my invention will be fully understood, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, and in which- Figure 1. is a vertical central section through a metallic water-cooled gas producer, show ing my improved bottom with its actuating devices in application. l is a sectional bottom composed of a seriesof hollow frusturns of cones forining hoods, bolted or attached to each other in such manner that when the respective frustums-preferably decreasing in diameter from base to apex are in position, spaces will be formed between the frustums bolted to adjoining I00 ones of less diameter, for the free passage of air or steam and air under pressure introduced directly by means of a pipe, J, into the interior of the bottom, and discharged radially, or nearly so, into contact with the fuel in the chamber E, for effecting combustion of the fuel and obviating the too free travel of the air or steam and air neXt the wall of the combustion-chamber, and the formation of arches of clinker and sticking of non-combustible matter to the wall of said chamber. This characteristic feature of the producer renders it entirely practical to use anthracite coal and anthracite culm for generating the heating and other gases. It will also be observed that such construction of a producer possesses the requisites and essential conditions for perfect combustion and for readily and effectively removing, continuously or intermittently, the non-combustible material while in full operation. The bottom I, made of cast-iron or other suitable metal, consists of a circular baseplate, 1?, having cast therewith a sleeve, i1, which fits around the main conduction-pipe J, extending vertically upward through the base of the sealed ash-pit I-I. Around the lower portion of the conduction-pipe J is fitted a collar, 2' secured rigidly thereto by means of a set-screw, i and against the top of this collar rests the sleeve 1 which is supported thereby. The circular base-plate t is attached to the hollow frustum I by means of stay-bolts i and this hollow frustum has preferably cast therewith a circular plate, with, preferably, a rim, 2', around the periphery for forming a channel of suflicient depth for containing a supply of water for cooling off the ashes or clinker.
On the under side of the circular bottom t is provided a rack, and meshing therewith is a cog-wheehj, supported on a shaft, j, journaled to a standard, j", attached to the base of the sealed ash-pit H, and oppositely in the wall of the ash-pit H. Around the shaft j, close to the re-enforce plate j, forming additional bearing-surface for the shaft, is fitted a collar, j with a set-screw, j, for holding it to place on the shaft, and for preventing the shaft from being drawn out of its bearing in the standard j when operated by the crank j secured thereto and provided with a handle, j
To the hollow frustum I is attached a hollow frustum, I, (smaller in diameter than the frustum 1,) by means of stay-bolts h, provided with sleeves h, for holding the two frustums the proper distance apart while at the same time solidly together, and with a space between the two frustums formed for the free passage of the air or steam and air from the interior thereof into the combustion-chamber of the producer. To the hollow frustum I is attached in a similar manner another frustum, I", with a space between the two for the passage of the air or steam and air therefrom, and to the hollow frustum I is similarly attached a conical-shaped hood,
2 see/799 I with a space between for permitting the air or steamand air to escape'from the interior thereof into the combustionchamber. Of course it will be observed that any desired number of frustums may be used in the construction of a bottom of the character described, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the use of the number shown in Figs. 1 and 4. Around the upper exteriorsurface of the hollow frustum I, at suitable distances apart, and preferably cast therewith, are projecting pyramidal points j", serving to grind up clinker that may accumulate in the combustion-chamber.
The bottom I should be diametrically so proportioned to the throat of the combustionchamber and at such distance therefrom that the superimposed mass in the. combustionchamber will be supported so that by the mere turning of the crank the ashes or other non-combustible matter will be discharged therefrom into the ash-pit beneath, while the producer is regularly making gas and without interference therewith.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains that the revolving bottom I and the upper and lower portions of the producer, with but slight modifications, may be adapted for use advantageously in a producer having bricklined walls; and, again, by more thoroughly water-cooling the bottom by suitable means for protection when the producer is run in the reverse way, that my invention is susceptible of being used for making what is known as water-gas for illuminating and other similar purposes.
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of a bottom composed of two or more frustums of cones, sleeves between the frustums, bolts inserted through the sleeves and frustums, a plate having a depending sleeve connected with the lower frustum, a blast-pipe on which said bottom is mounted, and means, as described, for rotating said bottom, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination of a bottom composed of two or more frustums and a hood, sleeves and bolts between said frustums and hood, a base-plate attached to the lower frustum, a blast-pipe extending upward into said bottom, a collar adjustable on said pipe, and mechanism, as described, for rotating said bottom, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. In a gas-producer, the combination of a bottom consisting of two or more hollow frustums of cones and a hood, bolts inserted through sleeves between the frustums and hood, a base-plate secured to the lower frustum with a sleeve, a blast-pipe extending upward through said sleeve, and a collar secured to said pipe, all arranged for support ing fuel and permitting of the admission of In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my the air or steam and air directly into the comhand in the presence of tWo subscribing witbustion-chamber, and means, as described, for nesses.
