GAS-PRODUCER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 770,624, dated September 20, 1904.
Application filed February 25, 1904. Serial No. 195,169.
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER O. AMsLEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gas-Producers, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved gas-producer; and to this end my invention consists of a gas-producer and in certain novel features of construction and combination of parts, all as fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the aceompanyiny drawings, which illustrate an application of my invention, Figure 1 is a central vertical section of a gas-producer constructed in accordance with my invention, and Fig. Q a part plan and a part cross-sectional View.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the combustion chamber of my producer constructed of fire-brick 2, with an outer metallic shell 3. As illustrated, al gas-exit 4 extends from the chamber through the lire-brick wall 2, and 5 represents a metallic cover having a feed-hopper 6. The body of the producer vor combustion-chamber rests on a circular plate 7, which plate in turn is supported by columns 8, extending upwardly from a suitable foundation 9. Foundation 9, as particularly shown by Fig. 1, enters into the formation of a trough or pit l0, which trough' is adapted to contain a quantity of water for the purpose of providing a water seal.
Extending downwardly from the combustion-chamber into the trough or pit is a casing or apron 11, having a series of openings 12, with suitable doors 13. These openings 12 are preferably arranged on the same plane as the upper part of a centrally-disposed casing 14. Casing 14 is of cylindrical form and extends upwardly from the bottom of the trough. It is provided with an opening 15, through which fluid from the fluid-supply pipe 16 passes.
Supported by the cylindrical casing 14 is a series of gratings 17. These gratings are ar- (No model.)
ranged in the form of a hollow frustum of a cone. The lower ends of the gratings, as shown, bear against a flange on the casing and the upper ends rest on a ring 18. EX- tending through the ring 18 and covering the opening at the upper plane of the hollow frustum-shaped grate I employ a hood 19. This hood is preferably made of a single casting and of the form shown, Which permits a free passage of fluid from the fluid-supply pipe to the fuel. The hood is supported by plates 20, which latter are secured to cylindrical casing 14, or it may be supported by a column 21. (Shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.)
Instead of having the bearing-surfaces of the gratings flat these surfaces may be curved or dome-shaped, as indicated by dotted lines Q2. Poke-holes 23 are conveniently located in the wall of the combustion-chamber.
The form of grate shown provides for a large area of grate-surface and is arranged so that there is a free circular space between the wall of the combustion-chamber and between the grate and the downwardly-extending casing through which the ashes and refuse pass to the water-sealed pit. This form of grate also permits of a better distribution of iiuid to the burning fuel in the combustion-chamber than has heretofore been provided for in gas-producers. The opening 15 of casing 14 permits the refuse that passes through the gratings to be removed from the trough in the same manner as the other refuse without interrupting the action of the producer.
The importance of the series of openings y12 in casing 11 will be appreciated by those skilled in the art, for they permit of ready access to the circular space between the lower plane of the frustum and casing 11 and the grate and the wall of the combustion-chamber for the purpose of breaking up or removal of clinkers, &c., that in operation of producers of this class are formed in this space. By stopping the fire-brick wall of the combustion-chamber on the plane shown and the employment of the casing 11 Iprovide a much `cheaper construction than is the case where the lire-brick wall is extended down below the water seal; also, a better Construction in that the ashes, elinkers, Sac., which form and adhere to the metallic easing may be removed at less expense and trouble.
What I claim is- 1. In agas-produeer, the `combination, with the combustion-chamber, of a water-sealed trough below the Combustion-Chamber, a centrally-disposed cylindrical casing extending upwardly from the bottom of the trough, and a series of gratings supported by the cylin-Y drieal easing arranged in the form of a hollow frustum of a Cone, substantially asset forth.
2. In a gas-producer, the combination, with the combustion-chamber, of a watersealed trough below the Combustion-Chamber, a easing extending downwardly from the combustion-Chamber into the trough, a cylindrical oasing extending upwardly from the bottom of the trough, and a series of gratings supported by the cylindrical casing arranged in the form of a hollow frustum of a cone, substantially as set forth.
3. Ina gas-producer, the Combination, with the combustion-chamber, of a water-sealed trough below the combustion-chamber, a oentrally-disposed cylindrical easing extending upwardly from the bottom of the trough, a series of gratings supported by the Cylindrical easing arranged in the form of a hollow frus tum of a cone, a fluid-supply pipe below the lower plane of the frustum, and a hood above the upper plane, substantially as set forth.
4. In a gas-producer, the combination with the combustion-chamber, of a water-sealed ltrough below the combustion-chamber, a grate in the form of a hollow frustum of a cone, a cylindrical easing extending upwardly from the bottom of the trough and supporting the grate, and an outer casing extending downwardly from the combustion-chamber into the water seal and provided with openings on a level with the lower plane of the frustum, substantially as set forth.
5. In a gas-producer, the combination, with the combustion-ohamber, of a wateresealed trough below the combustion-Chamber, a grate of the form of a hollow frustum of a cone, a cen'- trally-disposed cylindrical easing extending upwardly from the bottom of the trough, said casing being water-sealed and provided with an opening' through which refuse falling through the grate may be removed below the water seal without interrupting the action of the producer, substantially as set forth.
