Be it known ythat we, EBnNnznR A. W. Jnrrnnrns and GEORGE H. I'sLEY citizens of the United States, residing at Worcester, in the county ,of Worcester and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Gas-Producers, of which the following is a specification accompanied by drawings, forming a part of the same, in which- Figure 1 represents a'vertical central sectional view of a gas producer embodying ourl invention. Fig. 2 is a plan View of .the supporting rolls upon which the rota-ting portion of the gas producer is mounted.

Our invention relates to that class of gas producers designed for the production of fuel gas for metallurgical or other purposes, comprising a gas producing chamber in which carbon monoxid is produced by the action of air and steam upon a mass. of ineandescent coal.
In the gas producer embodying our invention fresh coal is introduced at the to of the chamber and rests upon the mass o incandescent coal, in which combustion is maintained by a charge of air and steam admitted at the bottom of the chamber. The resulting ash is contained in a hopper below the gas producing chamber and delivered through the open bottom of the hopper into an ash pan, from which the accumulated ash is removed either by hand or by mechanical means.
In the accompanying drawings we have not shown mechanical means for eitherI rethe. ash from the ash pan or for feeding the coal to the gas producing chamber, as these may be of any known and suitable type now in common use.
It is the object of our invention to increase the efficiency ofgas producers of this class as it relates to the cost, character and uan-` tity of the gas produced, by means o the construction and arrangement of parts asy hereinafter described, the novel features be-l ing pointed out in the annexed claims.
Dur improved gas producer, as illustrated in sectional view in Fig. l, consists of a metallic stationary shell or casing 1 supported upon upright posts, one of which is shown? a lining for the upper portion of the gas producing chamber. From lthe horizontal shelf 6 the casing 1 extends downward in the form of a dependin wall to a horizontal plane, indicated by theine 8, at or near the bottom of the hot zone in the gas producin chamber, and from the plane ofthe line the shell 1 extends obliquely upward and outward to arhorizontal plane slightly above the shelf 6, inclosing an annular water chamber 9 substantially triangular in cross section.
From the outer edge of the water chamber' 9 the casing l descends into the ash pan 4, with the lower portion gradually contracted in diameter, making the lower end. of the casing hopper shaped. The .gas'producing chamber 10 is inclosed at its upper section by the brick wall 7, and y:at its lower section by that portion of the metallic casing 1l forrninY the inner wall of the triangular water c amber 9.
The top of the chamber is covered by a plate vllhaving suitable openings 12, 12, for the introduction of fuel and for the inspection of the interior of the producer.
Inclosed within the lower end of the casingl l and partially inclosing the water chamber 9 is an ash hopper 13, which` is hopper shaped, corresponding with the lower section of the casin 1 and constructed with double walls 14, including a 'water space 15 open at the-top and closed at the bottom. The ash hopper 13 rests at intervals upon legs 16 which are supported by the ash pan 4. n
Mounted upon the ash panfliiis a cone 17, having at the top a series of annular slits 18 for the admission of air andsteam to the gas producer chamber, in the manner common inl gas producers of this class. The outer wall of the ash pan 4 is preferably inclined forming a V-shaped annular space 19 between the outer wall of the pan and the cone 17, for the accumulationof ash from the ash hopper 13.

The use of three supporting rollers 21 enables the weight of the ash pan and -the -structures supported thereon to rest with uniform p'ressure'upon the rollers,- so that the rotation ofa'ny one of'them will cause a rotaryimotion to be imparted to the ash pan 4, cone 17, andthe ash hopper 13.

ADuring the operation of our improved gas producer coal is fed through the openings 12 in a comparatively thin layer over the re', and steam or air is admitted through the annular slits 18 in the well known manner. The interior of the gas producer may be roughly divided into three horizontal portions as follows; at the bottom, the portion below the line 8 which is arranged to contain the ash from the consumedA fuel; immediately above thehne 8, the so called hot zoneor region of the most active combustion with a layer of unignited fuel above it, and in'the upper part of the producing chamber the accumulation of manufactured gas. 'The central horizontal portion is designed in the construction of the producer to inclose practically all of the ignited and incandescent fuel, and in operation a slow rotative movement is vimparted to the ash pan 4 and ash hopper 13. As the contents of the ash hopper are slowly rotated, there-will be a plane of cleavage between the moving contents of theash hopper and the superimposed mass of fuel contained in the gas producer chamber pro er, and substantially on the plane of the ine 8. This plane of cleavage is located above the apex of the conev 17 and near lthe bottom of thatportion of the producer designed to contain the ignited fuel. By constructing the inner wall of` that 'portion of the gas producing chamber subjected to: the greatest heat of metal, which is water'cooled by means. of the annular chamber 9, we prevent the accretion of cl'inkers upon the inner surface of the gas producing chamber, and with a lining wall of brick we cbviate all undue abstraction of hea/t from the manufactured gas, which accumulates in thev upper portion of the chamber and is withdrawn therefrom through the opening 31. The ash hopper 13 is constructed of metal water cooled by the water opening in the space 15, which prevents the accretion of clinkers and facilitates the downward movement4 of the ash' and clinkers into the ash pan 4.

1,. A gas producer having a stationary casing and an ash pan, with said .casing ex'- tending into said ash pan to form a seal for the casing, an ash hopper inclosed with-l in the lower part of said casing, and means for rotating said hopper.
2. A gas producer having a stationary casing and an ash pan, with said casing extending into said lash pan to provide a seal forrsaid casing, an ash hopper supported upon said ashlpan and inclosed in said casing, and means for rotating saidv pan and hopper.
3. A gas producer having a stationary casing, a rotatable ash hopper inclosed within the lower part of said casing, and
a water seal between the lower edge of said divided horizontally, with the upper portion stationary and the lower portion revoluble, and a downward extension from said lower revoluble portion.
6. A gas producer comprising a .stationary metallic casing, a revoluble ash pan below said casing, means for rotating said ash pan', a central cone in said pan forming with the side of the pan an annular space for ash,
and a hopper-shaped ash receptacle supported by said pan and inclosed within the lower portion of' said stationary casing.

l12. A gas producer comprising a casing divided horizontally'into two sections, with the upper section stationary and the lower section revoluble, said upper section having a depending wall extending within the upper edge of said revoluble section.

In a producer a casing inclosin a gas produca? chamber, a rotatable ash in below said chamber, a central cone in said ash pan having means for the admission of air to said chamber, said cone having inclined sides extending to the bottom of said ash pan, with the outer wall of said ash pan also inclined and arranged to intersect the inclined sides of said cone, thereby forming an annular space having a closed V-shaped bottom for the recelption of ashes, and means for rotating the as pan.
14. In a gas producer, arevoluble ash pan, an ash hopper supported by the pan, means for rotating the'` ash pan and hopper, a casing extending above the hopper to inclose a gas producing chamber, and a water seal 4between the pan and the casing.
15. In a gas producer, a revoluble ash pan, an ash hopper supported by the pan and extending into the pan to form a water seal, means or rotating the ash pan and hopper, a casing extending above the hopper to inclose a gas producing chamber, and a water seal between Lthe pan and the casing.
16. In a gas producer, a revoluble ash pan, an ash hopper sup rted by the pan, there being an opening etween the hopper and pan to permit removal of ash, means'for rotating the ash pan and hopper, a casing surrounding the hopper and extending above the same to inclose a as producing `chamber, and a water seal tween vthe pan and the casing.
