Be it known that i, CARLETQN items, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, in the county of New York 5 and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Water-Seal Gas-Producers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in O gas-producers of the waterseal type; and the object of my improvement is to provide a method for the introduction of the air-blast which will allow of the production of a combustible gas of uniform composition and of 5 high quality and which will also distribute the air in such a way that losses in fuel through the presence of unburned carbon in the ash will be avoided. I attain these objects by the apparatus illus- 20 trated in the accompanying drawings, in

My method of operation is as foilows: A fire is started in the producer and coal is fed in through the hopper until a deep bed of ignited coal is obtained. When in a state of ignition suitable for the production of gas, an air blast is directed through the twyerpipe 12 and discharges from the twyers 13 13 onto the inclined blast-battle 10. The blast is thus deflected outwardly toward the walls of the producer, but is prevented from forcibly striking the walls thereof by the bailling action of the gutters on the lower part of the The blast, therefore, after moving downward for a short distance reverses in direction and moves upwardly, being thereby dispersed in such a manner that its uniform passage through the bed of fuel is insured. The constricted walls of the lower part of the producer tend to prevent the blast from seeking the walls. The initial downward move- 7 ment of the air-blast'tends to burn out of the ash all nnconsumed carbon. The blast may be created by admission of steam through pipe 17 or by operating the fan 19. The prod ucts of combustion used in the latter case may be drawn from any suitable furnace or kiln. Lime and cement kilns furnish a gas particularly adapted for use for this purpose, owing to their richness in carbon dioxid and to their consequent low content of inert nitrogen.
- Vihat I claim is 1. A gas-producer comprising a shell lined with refractory material having in its upper part hoppers for the introduction of fuel, an outlet for the delivery of the combustible gas, a water seal, a blast-bafile diametrically located within the shell having pitched or inclined sides, and a blast-pipe terminatingin twycrs for the distribution of theair-bl'ast downwardly against the inclined sides of said baflie.
