Be it known that I, CHARLES L. I-IUsToN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Coatesville, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Gras-Producers, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to dispense with the center blast hood or twyer of a gas producer and to so construct the producer that a more thorough distribution of air will be effected than heretofore, with a consequent production of better and a more uniform product of gas and avoidance of undue loss of gas by excessive condensation of the producer, and better down flow of ashes and cinders (or clinkers) to the water sealed pit. This object I attain in the following rnanner, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which :-d

A is the body of the gas producer made in the ordinary manner and supported by a frame a carried by legs a, in the present in stance.
B is a water sealed ash pit made of a metallic frame l) and concrete body b. Extending from the body portion to a point below the water line of the ash pit in the present instance, is a tapered bosh plate C and mounted within the outer bosh plate is an inner tapered bosh plate D.
In the present instance the frame a, has a flange a2 depending at an angle, as shown in Fig. 2, and the outer bosh plate C is secured to this flange.
The bosh plate D is made of a series of solid plates rl having projections d which are secured to the inner wall of the outer bosh plate C, the projections space the two bosh plates a sufficient distance apart to form an annular chamber so arranged that the delivery of air will not be vertical but horizontal, 0r nearly so, to secure the penetration into the body of the fuel bed and to avoid any tendency to escape or short cut upward along the brick wall.
The inner bosh plate D does not extend to the water seal of the ash pit, but terminates some distance above it and the ashes as shown in Fig. 2, as they pass down from the body of the furnace are held first by the inner bosh plate D and then escape from the lower edge of the inner boshplate and are held by the outer' bosh plate until they reach the water sealed ash pit.
It will be noticed in referring to the drawing that the upper edge of the inner bosh plate d is preferably arranged some distance from the base a of tl e producer, so as to form an annular space *L through which air may escape from the annular chamber, formed by the inner and outer bosh plates, into the body of the producer. The air entering the producer at this point serves to cool the ad- -jacent iron parts and to force back into the fuel bed the gases which frequently, in the usual construction, escape through the joints at this point and burn when they reach the air, until appreciable loss of gas and the destruction of the ironwork results.
The inner bosh plate being solid lessens the interference with the downward movement of the ashes than in the construction where a grate or a perforated plate is used. i
E is a pipe leading to the space between the inner and outer bosh plates and this pipe is attached to a combined mixer and inspirator or blower E', c being the valved steam pipe and the mixer has a suitable damper for regulating the amount of air admitted. By this means the mixture passes into the charnber surrounding the inner bosh plate from which it is distributed into the interior of the producer, passing through the ashes at the bottom, as indicated in Fig. 2, or through the openings i into the ashes and fuel at the top of the bosh plate. The neck being IIO yner bosh plate terminating wider in sectional plan at the producer than at the down-comer, and being greater in height at the down-comer than at the producer so that a volume of gas will readily pass from the producer to the stack. While I have shown my invention as applied to a pressure gas producer the invention may be carried out in a suction gas producer as well.
It will be understood that in place of the and legs shown in Fig. 1, the outer bosh -I plate may be provided with supporting means and the body of the producer built directly upon the outer bosh plate as its sole support, infact the construction of the body of the producer can be altered without departing from the essential feature of the in-l vention.
I claim I` l. The combination in a gas producer, of a body portion, a water sealed ash pit, an inner and an outer bosh plate, both bosh plates being solid, the outer bosh plate extending to a point below the water line of the ash pit, the inner bosh plate terminating at a point slightly above the water line of the ash pit, forming an annular air space between the surface of the water and the edge of the inner bosh plate, the parts being so arranged that there will be a solid body of ash extending from the water sealed ash pit to a point above the lower end of the inner bosh plate, so that air forced in the space between the inner and outer bosh plates will pass under the inner bosh plate and penetrate the body of ashes, substantially as described.
2. The combination in a gas producer, of a body portion, a water sealed ash pit, an inner and an outer bosh plate, the outer bosh plate extending below the water line of the ash pit, the inner bosh plate terminating above the water line of the ash pit, said inner bosh plate being solid and so arranged that an annular air passage will be formed between the upper edge of said inner bosh plate and the frame of the producer, substantially as described.
3. The combination in a gas producer, of a body portion, a water sealed ash pit, two conically shaped bosh plates one mounted within the other and both solid forming an annular air space, an air inlet passage in the outer bosh plate, the outer bosh plate extending below the water line of the ash pit and the inabove the water ash pit, and the upper edge of the bosh plate terminating short of the body of the producer, with means for supplying air to the space between the inner and outer bosh-plates, substantially as described.
4. The combination in a gas producer, of a body portion, a water sealed ash pit, an outer j bosh plate extending from the body portion to a point below the water line of the ash pit, i

5. The combination in a gas producer, of a body portion, a water sealed ash pit, a conically shaped outer bosh plate extending from the body portion to a point below the water line of the ash pit, an inner bosh plate consisting of a series of segmental plates having projections secured to the outer bosh plate and forming an annular air passage between the two bosh plates, the lower edge of the inner bosh plate being above the water line of the ash pit and the upper edge being some distance from the underside of the body portion of the producer, so as to form air spaces in order that the air will enter the producer above and below the inner bosh plate, substantially as described.
6. The combination in a gas producer, of a frame, legs supporting the said frame, the body portion of the said producer being mounted on the said frame, a water sealed ash pit under the frame, said. frame having a depending annular flange, an outer conical bosh plate having its upper edge secured to the flange of the frame and terminating Abelow the water line of the ash pit, an inner bosh plate consisting' of a series of sections secured to the outer bosh plate, the said inner bosh plate extending to a point above the water line of the ash pit, substantially as described.
7. The combination in a gas producer, of a body portion, a water sealed ash pit, inner and outer bosh plates each conical in shape and solid, the sides of the inner bosh plate being parallel with the sides of the outer bosh plate, the inner bosh plate extending to a point above the water line of the ash pit, the outer bosh plate extending to a point below the water line of the ash pit, the so formed that there is a solid body of ashes res ting upon the bottom of the ash pit and extending up to a point above the lower end of the inner bosh plate, the ashes resting upon both the inner bosh plate and the lower portion of the outer bosh plate, means for supplying air to the space between the two bosh plates so that it will pass under the inner bosh plate and through a mass of ashes supported by the outer bosh plate, substantially as described.
