[Also in Group XXVIII] Charging of a battery of coke ovens from a plurality of coal bunkers 1, Fig. 1, mounted on a wagon, not shown, travelling on rails 28 on the oven cover 29 is effected through hoppers 2 each having a telescopic extension sleeve 50, Fig. 7, which fits into the oven aperture, an internal coal guide 51 and a plurality of coalsupporting rods 53 hinged about horizontal axes 52 and which when released allows the charge to fall into the oven. The hinged ends of the rods are located externally of the hopper and have bent-over portions contacting rollers 54 which when displaced upwardly release the rods. Dust-laden gas is drawn from the base of each hopper 2 through pipes 3 leading to a manifold 4 which discharges below the level of liquid, e.g. water or waste oil in a bath 5 and from which washed gas passes through a duct 20 into a cyclone 21 and thence to the intake of a fan 23. The separated particle outlet of the cyclone also dips into a bath 15 connected by pipes 13, 14 to bath 5; bath 15 being supplied from a feed 6 through pipes 7, 18, and bath 5 being supplied through pipes 7, 9 leading to a jacket 10 surrounding a perforated portion 12 of the manifold 4. Discharge is effected through valved pipes 48, 49 and a channel 17. In a modification, each suction-pipe discharges to the underside of a bed of coke or coal subjected to a water or oil spray, and contained in a chamber mounted in front of the bunker associated with each pipe.
