Discharging cooling discharged materials.- Coke discharged from an oven k is cooled and screened by passing it over a series of moving screens through which a current of cooling gas is passed, a conveyer for taking away the returned material, being provided in connection with each screen. As shown, the coke is delivered, by an elevator a, to a bunker c and passes through an outlet controlled by a damper z, on to an inclined shaking screen f, which discharges on to a conveyer h; the smaller coke falls into a hopper t and passes thence to an endless travelling sieve r, the coke retained thereby being carried away by a conveyer i and the dust collected in a hopper l. A fan v withdraws waste gases from the flue of a boiler d and delivers them to the hopper t, sieve r, and bunker c through pipes x, n, o respectively; an additional fan is provided for withdrawing, through pipe p, part of the gas which has passed through the sieve r and delivering it to the pipe o leading to the bunker c. The remainder of the gas passing through the sieve r escapes to the conduit u; to the boiler flues which also receive the gases from the bunker c and the screen f, the latter current traversing a superheater s before reaching the boiler.
