[Also in Groups XIII and XXX] Apparatus for drying coal fines or producing combustible gas by the partial combustion of pulverized coal in a current of air comprises an endless chain 6 having scraper blades 6a and carried on drums 7, the upper run sliding on a horizontal wall 5 upon which coal is regularly discharged from a hopper 1 while the lower run slides on a screen 10 below which air is admitted. The material is scraped along wall 5 where it is preheated and falls on to screen 10 along which it is scraped to a container 29. The gas passes into an enclosure, the top of which is formed by wall 5 and which has an oblique partition 19, the chamber being in communication through orifices 23 with a space 24 in which the pressure is lower than that of the gases so that chamber 22 forms an expansion chamber and separation of entrained dust takes place, the dust falling onto partition 19 and thence to a screw conveyer 25. The bars 10a of the screen 10 are inclined in the direction of travel of the material so that entering gas prevents material falling between the bars.
