Abstract
694,823. Gas producers; distilling and gasifying solid carbonaceous materials; ashpits. GALUSHA, A. L. April 18, 1951 [Jan. 22, 1951], No. 9020/51. Classes 51(i), 51(ii) and 55(i) In a pressure gas producer used either for making gas from coal or for producing oil from shale, ash falling around the edge of or between the steps of a rotary grate 10 collects in a conical hopper 19 closed by a slide valve 31 secured to a rack and bar 33 operated by a hand chain 32. The hopper 19 is never completely emptied, the residual ash being used as a seal to prevent loss of pressure in the water-jacketed firebox 9, and a ring 34 is fitted in the hopper supplying jets of water at high pressure toward the centre of the hopper and also downwardly along its walls, a gauge 35 being fitted' to indicate the water level. The water jacket 20 surrounding the firebox 9 and the rotary grate 10 are constructed as described in Specification 573,944 and the air or other gas supplied to the combustion zone from a fan 11 is caused to pass over the hot water in the jacket 20, means responsive to the temperature of the air supplied for controlling the temperature and moisture of the moist air as described in Specification 480,902, being also fitted. Gases from the producer pass through a centrifugal dust separator Fig. 1 (not shown) to a distributing system. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 4 which may be used to produce oil from shale, the dust separator is replaced by a scrubber 62 packed with porous material over which cool oil is sprayed by jets 16 and the ash hopper 63 is enlarged. When the apparatus is operated simply as a gas producer, the liquid used in the scrubber is water, and a gas dryer 64 is fitted at the top of the scrubber. Coal or shale is charged from a hopper 7 through shoots 8 as described in the aforementioned Specification 573,944 and a rotary agitator 40 which may also be raised and lowered as described.in Specification 573,949 is fitted in the firebox 9. In the production of oil the shale, is heated under deoxidizing conditions in the firebox to approximately 800‹F and the oil formed is driven off as vapour, which is condensed and collected in the scrubber 62.
