A nozzle 7 in the gas-offtake 6 of a coke oven is supplied during the coking period with liquor through a non-return valve 9 and line 8 and with steam or gas under pressure through line 11 and valve 13 during the charging of the oven to evacuate the gases given off during the charging. In a modification the valves 9 and 13 are replaced by a three-way cock at the junction 15 of lines 8 and 11.
