A tying machine comprises wire training means for forming a loop of wire in flat band form about an object to be tied, tensioning means for tightening the wire loop about the object, tie forming means for twisting together superposed overlapping ends of the wire loop. and finger means movable for insertion between the overlapping portions to cause the ends of the loop-to intersect at a point away from the slot of the pinion. In operation, a gripper 14 is moved from a position to the left of a twisting pinion 16, Fig. 2, to a position adjacent a gripper 15 to the right of the twisting pinion, as described in Specification 523,786, [Group 1], to which reference is made. The gripper 14 is closed on the end of a flat wire W projecting from the gripper 15 which latter is then opened and the gripper 14 is swung out, moved in front of the twisting pinion 16, and swung in again to lay the wire in the flared slot of the pinion 16. During this latter movement the wire engages a shoulder 307, Fig. 10, on a pivoted finger 300 and lifts the finger to the position shown in Fig. 10. The gripper 14 is then halted, a box B placed on a supporting frame 10 and ring means 11, Fig. 1 (not shown), carry the wire around the box as in Specification 523,786. Towards the end of the revolution of the ring the wire is laid on the underside of the finger 300, to cause the ends of the loop to cross at a point X between the finger and the gripper 14, and the supply end of the wire enters the slot in the twister 16 to lie face to face with the wire previously laid therein. The gripper 15 is advanced just before the end of the revolution of the ring 11 to receive the wire supply between an open jaw 316, Fig. 3, and the body 100 of the gripper. The jaw is then closed by a roller 322 on a link 116 and the other gripper 14 moved to the left to tension the wire. Separators 170, Figs. 2, 13, are then moved down to pass between the overlapped wire ends at each side of the twister 16 and fork members 301 are then moved down between the separators 170 and the twister 16 to hold the overlapped ends closely together. The twister 16 then rotates to form the tie and the ends of the loop are severed by cutting edges 315 on the separators 170 by retraction of the separators. The separators 170 are then advanced to eject the tie from the twister 16.
