Abstract
937,030. Winding. McINTYRE PACKAGING Inc. Feb. 27, 1962, No. 7531/62. Class 120 (2). [Also in Groups XVII and XXX] Strand material such as shoe laces is prepared for packaging by being wound into a circular coil, and flattened by being drawn through a restricted opening, after which a wrapper or label may be wrapped therearound (see Group XVII). A conveyer chain 120 carries in step-by-step manner pairs of shoe laces L placed by an operator in blocks 150, each block 150 stopping in its uppermost position, Fig. 11, so that the laces may be moved by jaws 165 into a slot 201 in a mandrel 200 and resiliently held therein by a spring 205. A guiding and tensioning lever 230 is raised as the laces approach and enter the slot, and is lowered as the jaws 165 retract to position a clip 235 between the laces to prevent their overlapping as they are wound on to the mandrel and cause a portion 233 to bear against the laces to tension them. The mandrel is then rotated to centre the laces in a groove 211 in a sleeve 210, Figs. 13, 14, whereafter the mandrel is withdrawn to the position of Fig. 13 to leave the laces in a coil. A plate 275, Figs. 11, 15, is moved transversely to the mandrel axis to draw the laces out through a slot 213 in the sleeve 210 and into a slot 266 in a housing 250. Four slots 201 are provided in the mandrel 200 so that laces of different lengths can be wound by changing the angle through which the mandrel is rotated.
