A method of winding a length of wire on to a toroid is characterized in that the said length of wire is anchored at one end and is repeatedly engaged at intermediate points in its length and repeatedly transported in loop form around and through said toroid to form successive turns of a winding. One end of a length of wire 5 in a wire chamber 1 is passed through friction pads 4 at the end of the chamber, through a toroid 6 on which the wire is to be wound, and is anchored at 7. A pulley 3 is then moved around the toroid 6 so as first to engage the wire 5 between the chamber 1 and the toroid and then to carry the loop so formed around part of the toroid to a position to the right thereof, Fig. 1b. A hook 2 is then moved above the chamber 1 and through the toroid 6 to engage the loop around the pulley 3, Fig. 1c. The hook 2 then withdraws the wire through the toroid and into wire chamber 1 until the wire slips off the hook due to its finite length, Fig. 1d. Thus one turn is wound on the toroid 6 and for each further turn the cycle is repeated, the toroid being suitably rotated or reciprocated during winding. A split flexible material top may be fitted to the chamber 1 and the hook 2 may be inclined so that the slit closes up after it to hold the wire 5 captive. Another arrangement, Fig. 3, for winding a toroid 15 has a circular wire chamber 7 and a hook 9 carried by a suitably driven arm 10.
