Abstract

553,788. Bundling. CHEESEMAN, J. J. Sept. 2, 1941, No. 11191. [Class 94 (i)] A machine for binding packages with metal strip or wire comprises a member for training a strip around a package, means for rotating the member around the packages always in one direction, and a series of freely-rotatable coplanar-rollers which support around, but out of contact with the package, additional strip which is drawn from the supply during the movement of the member. The additional strip accumulates on the rollers to form a stock which is separated at intervals from the main supply and applied to successive packages. The member for training the strip comprises a ring 11 which is supported on rollers 26 within an opening in a vertical frame 10 and is rotated unidirectionally by a motor 40. The parcel B to be bound is supported within the ring by a table 23. The ring is provided at intervals with laterally-projecting pins on which flanged rollers 50 are freely rotatable. One of these rollers, 50a, serves as a take-off roller for the metal strip S and may have associated with it a set of adjustable rollers 53 to apply tension to the strip as it passes around the article B. Rollers 65 are provided for applying tension to the strip as it passes from the supply to the ring. In use, the strip S is drawn from the supply over the rollers 55. 50a, and 53, and its front end is clamped in a gripper 14 on the edge of the table 23, the rollers 50a being just below the level of the table. Rotation of the ring 11 in a counterclockwise direction trains the strip around the package B. At the end of one revolution, the ring stops and the overlapping ends of the strip S are connected to one another by a suitable sealing-mechanism 16, the strip being severed after sealing. During the rotation of the ring, the strip has not only been drawn from the supply, but a length of the strip has been laid over the rollers 50. With successive rotations of the ring, a stock of the strip is built up on the rollers 50, as shown in Fig. 7, and when the rollers are full, the supply strip from the rollers 55 is severed. To maintain the coils of strip in place on the rollers, a resilient clamping band is unwound from a roller 58 and passed over the rollers 50. The binding operation is then continued on successive packages until the stock of strip accumulated on the rollers is exhausted, when the clamping band is removed and strip is again drawn off the rollers 55.
