[Also in Division D1] A machine smooths a previously applied tin foil wrapping on a chocolate egg or similar article, wraps it in a further foil and ties a ribbon on a tuft at the end of the further foil. Smoothing the tin foil.-The tin foil is smoothed by rotating rubber-coated rollers (5, 6, Fig. 1, not shown) which co-operate with a coiled spring (26, Fig. 3, not shown) loosely mounted for rotation on an arm (18) which is spring-urged downwardly into engagement with the egg. The inner portions of the rollers are driven, but the outer portions are free. Portions (28, 29) of the support for the arm (18) smooth the ends of the egg. The smoothing may be completed at: a second station. Applying inserts: wrapping.-A base 66 (Fig. 2) for the egg is fed from a magazine 65 by a suction gripper 64 against a rectangular sheet of transparent foil cut from a roll 44 and ocated over a hole in a plate 52 by four pads or brushes 10. When the egg has been moved through the hole in the plate (52, Fig. 8, not shown) entraining the base (66) and the central portion of the wrapper, the mid portions of the sides of the wrapper are folded inwardly by pins (68a) which move radially inwardly of the plate (52) and by arms (69). The corners of the wrapping, which are still held by the pads or brushes, are then moistened by ducts in the plate (52) and are folded inwardly by further radially-moving pins on the plate (52). Alternatively the plate (52) may be horizontal and the egg moved vertically. Encircling the ribbon around the tuft.-A ribbon (135, Fig. 18, not shown) is subsequently encircled around the neck of the tuft on the wrapping by rollers (143), (144) on arms (103, (104) to tie a knot which may be a double bow (see Division D1). Feeding the eggs.- The eggs are moved from their initial position (7a) (Fig. 1, not shown) to the smoothing station by a yoke (32) moved in a closed path. They are pushed through the wrapping plate 42 (Fig. 2) by a plunger 62 and are guided in this motion by a plunger 92 which may be fitted with a suction cap 93 serving to reduce the pressure necessary from the plunger 62. While the eggs are moved from the position 7d (Fig. 2) to the position 7e where the ribbon is tied, the neck of the tuft is held by a scissors device 70.
