Abstract

A cord 37 (Fig. 1) underlying an article or stack 12 is carried around the article by an oscillating needle 32 provided with guides for the cord and drawing the cord through a tensioning friction device 39. In the machine illustrated the cord, which is preferably of nylon, is carried by the needle 32 to be held adjacent the clamped free end of the cord. A knotting device (Fig. 5) is then rotated to form a loop, as illustrated, and jaws 54 then grip the two ends 61 so that they can be pulled through the loop after the cord has been cut by a knife 56 (Fig. 4, not shown). Each operation of the machine is initiated by a foot pedal (not shown) and the motions are derived from a motor 14. After the needle 32 has been returned to the position of Fig. 1 the cord 37 lies in a groove in the conveying surface 11.
