Abstract

335,314. Bamkin, J. W. July 26, 1929. Knot-tying devices; counting - mechanism, applications of.-In a machine for inserting loops of coloured cotton or the like into textile articles, for the purpose. of identification or for securing pairs or groups together, a needle inserts a length of cotton and a rotary device knots the loop. The machine may be fitted with a counting device. The illustrated form of the invention resembles generally an ordinary sewing machine with a reciprocating needle 15. The article b (e.g. the foot of a stocking) is inserted between the presser-members 24 and the plate 18 so that it contacts with the abutments 92, Fig. 6. The thread-end a is clamped between the cutter 27 and clamping plate 30. The machine is started and the needle 15 passes the thread through the plate 18 forming a loop c. The sleeve 43 of the wrapping device makes a partial revolution in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 8, and the finger 45 engages the thread loop. The needle then commences its up-stroke and the finger 45 is released to grip the thread, whereupon the sleeve 43 is rotated in the reverse direction. The grippers 82, 83 close upon the thread when the needle is fully withdrawn. As the gripper 82 moves, the thread is pulled to form the required length of loop. The feed-plate 18 is then moved to position the article beneath the needle, Fig. 10, and the cutter 27 frees the thread-end. The needle descends to form a second loop d, this loop passing through the material. The wrapping device operates as before, so that the finger 45 engages the thread loop, but instead of reversing its direction, it continues to rotate to wrap the thread round the tying bar 68 forming a loop. At the initial stage of the operation, the hook 76 is moved from its normal position, Fig. 6, to the position below the finger 75 of the bar 68 where it remains till the end of the wrapping action. At the end of this action, the bar 68 is moved endwise so that the hook 76 is exposed. The ends of the thread are laid between the ends of the tying bar 68 and the exposed hook. The hook 76 is then retracted, drawing the thread ends into the tying bar through the loop, so knotting the loop. The feed plate then moves back into its normal position. The counting mechanism may be connected with a lever located below the table so as to be engaged and actuated by the loop d. The articles may be counted singly, or in dozens of pairs, as in the case of stockings. In the example illustrated, the counting device 95, Fig. 2, has a scale wheel 97 turned by gears driven by a finger 111 engaged by the tacking loop.
