Abstract

1,095,000. Bundling-machines. F. AUBERY. Sept. 21, 1965 [Sept. 22, 1964; June 10, 1965; Aug. 4, 1965], No. 40271/65. Heading B8C. [Also in Divisions D1 and F2] In a machine for binding packages P, Fig. 1, the leading end of a binder L is engaged in a clamp 10, which is carried by a driven endless chain C round the package. A knotting unit 9 (see Division D1) then knots the two ends of the binder. The binder is fed from a reel L<SP>1</SP>, round tensioning rollers, and a guiding finger 15 to clamp 10, Fig. 6 (not shown), where it is gripped between a washer (11) and a spring- loaded disc (12). Alternatively the clamp may comprise a rod (44), Fig. 21 (not shown), over which the binder (L<SP>4</SP>) is passed, fixed on a plate (43) mounted on an endless chain (C<SP>1</SP>). A pivotable jaw (45) on the plate (43), spring biased against the rod (44) into gripping position, prevents the binder from slipping off. The clamp is opened by a stationary cam. A block (49) of flexible material, or a spring, fixed on the inner surface of the lever (45) controls the slipping of the binder when released during the knotting operation. After the package has been encircled by the binder, the clamp 10 engages the binder coming directly from the reel, Fig. 4 (not shown), and the knotting unit 9 is advanced transversely above the lengths L, L<SP>2</SP> to knot the ends of the binder together. A bar 37, which clamps the package on to a roller support 5 during binding may also hold in position panels of cardboard or other material fed from magazines B, B<SP>1</SP> which are designed to protect the corners of the package P during binding. Several machines may be coupled together and may be worked alternately.
