Abstract
663,849. Bule-tying machines. STROWLGER, E. J. Feb. 12, 1949 [Feb. 12, 1948], No. 4149/48. Class 45 Apparatus for use in securing strands of wire or lengths of strip metal 5 under tension around a package comprises a support 1 on which the package is laid; a passage 3 through the support for the wire or strip 5, a reel 30 on which a supply of wire or strip is wound, means 4 for guiding the wire or strip from the reel through the passage 3 to be secured at a number of points and means 9, 14 for gripping the wire or strip and for applying successive tensions thereto after each securing operation. The support 1 is fixed to a channel section member 7 which has slots 12 in which one jaw 9 of a gripper is slidably mounted, to be retained in the uppermost parts of the slots by springs 11. The other jaw 14 of the gripper is pivoted to the jaw 9 by parallel links 13. It is held against jaw 9 by springs 15 and is opened by a footoperated lever 24 and link 26. Its downward opening movement is limited by a slotted link 21. Jaw 14 has a serrated tongue which enters a corresponding groove in the jaw 9. The binding wire or strip 5 passes from the reel 30, through a guide 32, over a guide pulley 34 between the jaws 9, 14 and through the guide 4 in a slot 3 in the table 1. In use a package is placed on the table against a guide 36 which is aligned with the wire guide 4 and the end of the wire or strip is stapled to the near side of the package. Tension is then applied to the wire or strip by means of the foot lever 24 which first moves the jaw 14 downwardly to grip the wire or strip between the jaws and then moves both jaws downwardly together against the tension of springs 11. The wire is then stapled manually to the top of the package, tension is released, the package rotated through a right angle, tension re-applied the next side stapled and so on until the wire or strip encircles the box, after which it is cut manually
