Abstract

777,930. Bottling. SNELLING (LONDON), Ltd., L. C. Nov. 4, 1955 [Aug. 4, 1954], No. 22608/54. Class 125(2). In a counter-pressure filling machine having a filling valve as described in Specification 777,929, the snifting chamber comprises an upper member 22 adapted to be held stationary in gas-tight relation to the delivery tube 10, and a lower skirt member 14 carrying a sealing washer is adapted to seal against the mouth of a bottle and spaced from the delivery tube to allow passage of gas between the skirt member and delivery tube, the skirt member 14 and upper member 22 being urged apart by resilient means 25 and being connected together by a substantially gas-tight outer envelope 18 to enclose a space of variable volume in communication with a bottle in contact with the sealing washer 15. The skirt member is attached to a cylinder 18 which is in gas-tight sliding contact with the upper member 20<SP>2</SP> which takes the form of a piston firmly held by a sealing washer 24 fixed to the delivery tube 10, although the piston may be fixed directly to the tube 10. In operation the delivery tube descends into the bottle, moving the piston to the base of the cylinder, and the bottle is filled as described in the above Specification. During subsequent separation of the valve from the bottle and when the tube 10 reaches the starting position relative to the holder the spring 25 starts to move the cylinder 18 away from the piston thus causing the high pressure gas in the bottle to expand slowly into the space between the piston 20 and the cylinder bottom, so eliminating frothing and loss of liquid from the bottle. The cylinder may be replaced by a bellows fixed between the piston and the skirt member.
