Abstract
In a method for the biological or therapeutic treatment of matter or for the carrying out of a chemical reaction by bombardment with a beam of high energy electrons or other charged particles, the beam is brought out from a vacuum chamber under pressure of e.g. less than 10-2 mm., to a working chamber under atmospheric pressure, through one or more chambers under increasing pressures. The vacuum and intermediate chambers are connected to pumps, and the beam passes through fine apertures between chambers. The apparatus is described in Specification 777,426 (see Groups XL(c) and III). The apparatus may be used for sterilization of food or for promoting chemical reactions between gases, liquids and solids, and may involve ions of the beam e.g. protons or oxygen ions. The beam may also be used for the supervision of the chemical reaction initiated or maintained by it. Conclusions e.g. as regards partial pressures may be drawn from the diffusion of the beam.
