Abstract

776,688. Preserving milk &c. KAZMI, M. A. Jan. 4, 1955 [Oct. 18, 1954], No. 203/55. Class 49 in preserving perishable liquids, e.g. milk and liquids from coconut, date and sago palms, in containers, the container is filled with such a volume of liquid as will, on expansion by heating to a predetermined sterilizing temperature, completely fill the container, the container and liquid are heated to this sterilizing temperature, the container is then sealed, and the sealed container is allowed to cool. An apparatus for carrying out the process comprises a water-containing tank 4 with an outer wall 6 and an inner wall 5 and having an airtight lid 8 provided with an orifice 9 which can be closed and opened by manipulation of a screw stopper 10, and provided with means 12 for indicating temperature or pressure in the tank. In using this apparatus, containers 1 charged with the appropriate quantity of the liquid are supported immersed in the water to a depth 2 in. from the container rims, the tank is heated from below and heat is transferred from water between the walls 6 and 5 to water inside the wall 5 and so to the containers and their contents, the time for reaching the sterilizing temperature being preferably 45 min., the containings are sealed at this temperature, and the sealed containers are then removed from the tank.
