Abstract

Pharmaceutical solutions, fruit juices, and other liquids sealed in thermoplastic containers are sterilized by heating at temperatures above the softening point of the thermoplastic material while completely immersed in a liquid or gas heat-exchange medium of a density lower than that of the liquid in the container, and then cooling to a temperature below the softening point. The volume of liquid and gas at the sterilization temperature must be less than that of the container and the boiling point of the liquid being sterilized must not be less than that of the heat-exchange medium. If the sterilizing temperature is above the boiling point of the liquid being sterilized, or if the heat-exchange medium is a gas, the pressure outside the container must be greater than that inside.
