Abstract

The interior of a plastic container is sterilized by introducing into it a liquid or gaseous sterilizing medium, whilst it is surrounded by a cooling liquid. The sterilizing medium may be a product which is to be filled into the container. After filling e.g. with hot food, it is closed hermetically, inverted in the cooling liquid so that the remaining air in the container passes through the hot product and is itself sterilized, and held in the cooling liquid until the product has cooled below the softening temperature of the plastic material. The plastic container preferably has at least one concave surface to provide for the reduction in internal pressure consequent upon the cooling. According to an example, a beer-bottle shaped container of 700 ml. capacity having a wall thickness of 0.2-0.3 mm., produced from non-plasticised polyvinyl chloride by blow moulding, was immersed up to near its opening in a bath containing tap water. The container was then filled with hot paraffin oil at a temperature of 182 DEG C. without exhibiting deformation. The containers may be filled with irradiated food.
