Abstract

775,940. Dashpots. ALLIS-CHALMERS MANUFACTURING CO. June 10, 1955 [June 24, 1954], No. 16789/55. Class 108(3). [Also in Group XXXVII] In an electric circuit-breaker the movement of the armature 45 of a tripping electromagnet 40 is delayed by a time-lag device 50 comprising a pair of sealed compartments 54, 55 each having a flexible wall 56, 57 and being interconnected by a porous filter 63 and a unidirectional means 62, 69. When the armature 45 is attracted, a plunger 64 is raised and fluid is forced from compartment 54 through the filter 63 to the compartment 55. When the armature is released, the fluid returns without restriction through the passage 62 past the non-return ball valve 69. In other arrangements the return of the fluid is permitted by a resilient check valve and a more porous filter, Fig. 5 (not shown) or a straight passage, Fig. 6 (not shown). The device 50 is pivoted at 51 in brackets 52 and has an arm 80 secured to an adjusting rod 81 which is vertically movable when a thumb screw 87 is slackened. Adjustment of the rod 81 causes the tilting of the device 50 to suitably position a member 65 in an arcuate slot 68 in an arm extending from the armature to determine the required time delay.
