The levers 43 are disposed on opposite sides of the chamber 45 which is provided with the cap 46 at its right hand end, as viewed in Fig. 3. The cap 46 and the end of the chamber 45 form air-tight and dust-tight bearings for the shaft-44 which extends through the end of the chamber 45 just inside of the cap 46.- lnside of the chamber`45 there is secured to` the shaft 44 the lever 47 pivoted at its other end at 48 to the vertically extending memiber 49 integral with or secured to the member 50 upon which is pivoted'the ring member 51 on the pivots 52, 52. The sucker element 53 is, therefore, supported upon the member 49 but it is connected thereto through two pivotal axes at right angles to each other, thus giving a univer- Y sal or gimbals connection therewith.
This allows the sucker element 53 to perfectly and nicely adjustvitself with the stationary sucker element 55 whose upper surface is the active sucker surface of the stationary ele` ment, the member 53 having raised portions on its lower surface which are suitably finfished or prepared as indicated at 56, the
surfaces on the parts 56 engaging the surface of the member 55 as explained in prior' U. S. Patent No. 861,611, July 30, 1907. The lower sucker element'55 is in the bottom of the main casing 57 which at its upper end has the outwardly extending flange 58 between which and the cover 59 is provided suitable packing ring or gasket 60, if desired. The cover 59 is internally screwthreaded at 6l to receive the screw-threaded ring 62, the flange 58 extending over the screw-threaded flange on the ring 62 and being rotatable relatively to the ring 62 and tothe cover 59 by handle 63 attached to the cup or casing 57. By thus rotating the cup 57 which carries the relatively stationary sucker element, the amount of surface coacting between the stationary and movable sucker elements may be varied as and for the purposes described in said prior patent No. 861,611. The rods or members 39, heretofore referred to, are fastened at their lower ends to the cover 59 as shown in Fig. 5. Vithin the member 49 is arspiral spring 64, under compression, exerting a. downward pressure upon the head 65 upon the member 66, thus thrusting against the member 53. By this means lost motion between the member 53 and the member 49 and the parts, as lever 47, etc., attached thereto, is prevented so as to maintain the calibration of the instrument, and any lost motion between these parts, though relatively slight, would enable the early movement or attraction of the armature 34 in taking up such lost motion to deliver a force in the nature of a hammer blow tothe sucker element 53 tending to lift it or separate it from the stationary sucker element improperly, that is, before the overload or other electrical condition had existed for the desired time or for other degree of overload or other electrical condition to which the apparatus is intended to respond. The left ends of the levers 43, as viewed in Fig. 3, are connected by a pivotal shaft 67 to which is pivoted the lower end of the member 68 within which engages the rod 69 pivoted at 70 to the armature-lever 32. Inside of the member 68 is the spring 71 under compression, tending to hold the pivots and 67 separated and therefore holding lever 32 and levers 43 apart, thus further preventing lost motion between the armature 34 and the levers 43 and attached parts, as at pivots 38 and 42.
On opposite ends of a diameter of the cover 59 are provided thecoaxial pivots 7 which engage in slots 73 in the stirrup members 74 attached to the housing 6. These pivots 72 and slots 73 allow vertical adjustment of the cup 57 and attached parts for different initial or normal positions of the armature 34, which, as well understood, must be adjusted to different Vpositions or diHerent distances from the poles 36 so as to respond to different current strengths through the circuit breaker. This adjustment of the armature 34 for different electrical conditions to which the breaker is to respond is procured by the handle 75 which moves in a horizontal slot in the member 7 6 and carries at its inner end member 77v which has a projection 78. This projection 78 moves in an inclined slot in the member 78a which member isrigidly attached to and forms part of the bifurcated lever 37 pivoted at 33. By moving this handle 75 in one direction or the other in its horizontal slot the projection 78 moves correspondingly in the inclined slot in member 78a which slot slants upwardly and downwardly, the member 78al and, therefore, the lever 37, is moved upon its pivot 33 and in so doing raises or lowers the rods 39 thus raising or lowering the start delaying device as awhole. This also adjusts the armature 34 to different distances from the poles 36, so that the breaker shall respond to different electrical conditions fer which the armature 34 may be set. In apparatus of the character described, the combination with a movable member, of a sucker comprising relatively fixed and movable elements, a housing for said sucker closed to the atmosphere and comprising a cup and a cover, the fixed sucker element being rotatable with said cup with respect to said cover, said movable sucker element remaining in fixed relation to said lcover respecting rotation relative to said iixed sucker element, and means extending through a Wall of said cover connecting said movable member with said movable sucker element.

In apparatus of the character described, the combination with a movable member, of a sucker comprising relatively fixed and movable elements, a housing closed to the atmosphere inelosing said sucker elements, and a pivot extending through a wall of said housing at right angles to the direction of movement of the movable sucker element connecting said movable sucker element with said movable member.

In apparatus of the character described, the combination with a movable element, of a sucker, a housing closed to the atmosphere inelosing said sucker, a shaft extending through the wall of said housing, a connection from the movable element of said sucker to said shaft within said housing, and a connection from said shaft to said movable element outside of said housing. In apparatus of the character described, the combination with a movable element, of a sucker, a housing closed to the atmosphere inelosing said sucker, a rock shaft extending through the wall of said housing, a lever secured to said rock shaft within said housing, the movable sucker element pivoted to said lever, a lever connected to said rock shaft outside of said housing, a member pivoted to said lever and to said movable element, a resilient connection outside of said housing between said last-named lever and said movable element for preventing lost motion, and means inside of said housing for taking up lost motion between the movable sucker element and said first-named lever.

In apparatus of the character described, a sucker comprising relatively fixed and movable elements normally in adhesive contact with each other, a housing inclosiug said sucker and comprising a cup and a cover, the relatively fixed sucker element being in fixed relation with said cup, and said cup movable with respect to said cover for adjusting said sucker elements with respect to each other.

In apparatus of the character described, a sucker comprising relatively fixed and movable elements, a housing inclosing said sucker elements and comprising a cup and a cover, said relatively fixed sucker element being in fixed relation with said cup, and a connection between said cup and cover permitting rotation between said cup and said cover for adjusting said sucker elements with respect to each other comprising a member secured to said cover, and a flange on said cup intervening between said member and said cover.

In apparatus of the character described, a sucker comprising relatively fixed and movable elements, a housing closed to the atmosphere inclosing said sucker elements and comprising a cup and a co'ver, the relatively fixed sucker element being in fixed relation with said cup,'a connection between said cup and cover permitting rotation of said cup with respect to said cover fory adjusting said sucker elements with respect to each other, and a 'mechanical connection from saidmovable sucker element through a substantially air tight joint in the wall of said cover.

In apparatus of the character described, the combination with a movable element, of a sucker comprising relatively xed and stationary elements, a housing inclosing said suckerelements and comprising a/cover and a cup rotatable with respect to said cover, a shaft extending through the wall of said cover, a connection from the relatively movable sucker element to said shaft within Vsaid housing, and a connection from said ment, of a sucker comprising relatively fixed v and stationary elements, a housing inclosing said sucker elements and comprising a cover and a cup rotatable with respect to said cover, a shaft extending through the wall of said cover, a connection from the relatively movable sucker element to said shaft within said housing, a connection from said shaft to said movable element outside of said housing, and means for simultaneously adjusting the position of said movable element and said housing. 26. In apparatus of the character described, the combination with a movable element, of a sucker comprising relatively fixed and movable sucker elements, a housing inclosing said sucker elements and comprising a cover and a cup rotatable with respect to said cover, a member extending through the wall of said cover, a lever outside of said housing connected to said member and to said movable element, a lever inside of said housing connected to said member and to the movable sucker element, andmeans for simultaneously adjusting the position of said movable element and said housing.
